President's Message March 2009

President's Message

Our speaker for the February meeting was Ms. Amy Germann P.A.   She was a great speaker and also very knowledgeable.  We are very happy that she was able to donate her time to speak with us.  Once she was done we had a very busy meeting.

We had discussions regarding the property at 4109 Des Prez, the fire hydrants in the Gulf Coast Dr. area and the Hernando Beach Dredge.

At the Port Authority meeting on Wednesday February 3rd our new Interim Director Ms. Susan Goebel presented a Status Report regarding the Dredge which is on page 22 it has the latest details regarding the dredge.

A new topic that has just been brought to my attention is...Parking Fees at Area Boat Ramps. They already have parking fees at Rogers Park and Pine Island.  Now the Parks and Recreation Department is discussing parking fees at Bayport, Jenkins Creek and Hernando Beach.

They are considering adding some kind of a parking system that would charge approximately $3.00 to park.  An Annual Pass will also be available.  The fees would run from February - November and they would have employees on site.  This is still very early on in the process so there are still many details to work out.

With regard to the Hernando Beach Boat Ramp parking, many residents that live in the north section would benefit immensely from this change.  Currently on a good weather weekend or Holiday weekend many boats are lined up on Calienta St and they are jockeying for position to use the ramps.  When the regular parking is full they park on the sides of the road and on other resident’s property.  This causes congestion and the residents who are trying to get home have trouble passing safely.  Also, by the end of the weekend there is garbage overflowing in the dumpsters and the restrooms need cleaning.

Due to the cutbacks at the county they are looking for ways to subsidize these types of services.  Please keep in mind the parking fees have worked very well at Pine Island and Rodgers Park over the past few years.

So if you have any comments or questions please join us at the next HBPOA meeting on Thursday March 4th at the Coast Guard Auxiliary where we will be discussing this issue.
